Second successful year for trendsetting Nairn local
A fashion-forward female from Nairn is celebrating her second year as a regional finalist of a prestigious Specsavers competition.
Doreen Johnson, 66, fought off competition from across the country to become one of just 10 regional finalists in Scotland, and is now representing the over 60s age category in the Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition.
As a regional finalist in 2016, Doreen is hoping to do one better in 2017 and qualify for the next stage this year. If chosen, she will be invited to a star-studded awards ceremony in London – and if she takes the top spot, she will win £10,000.
She said: ‘I can’t believe I’ve been picked again as a regional finalist, I was equally surprised and thrilled to hear the news. I submitted an entry for my husband this year, as he did for me last year, but it looks like I’m the luckier one.
‘Your eyesight is very precious so I’ll happily wear my specs with pride and with so many styles and colourful frames on offer I love to pick a bright pair and make a statement.’
Doreen was welcomed to her local Specsavers store in Nairn to be presented with a framed certificate, £150 Specsavers voucher and bottle of champagne from the store director to mark her achievement.

Now in its 22nd year, the competition will give regional finalists from five age categories – 16-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-59 and over 60s, plus a Facebook favourite voted by the public – the chance to attend the awards ceremony at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on 10 October, which will be hosted by former Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle.
For every eligible entry to the competition, Specsavers donates £1 to anti-bullying charity, Kidscape and to date the competition has raised £400,000.
