Following an overwhelming response throughout March, Specsavers in Ripley are continuing its appeal for unwanted pairs of glasses in a bid to help improve eyecare in developing countries.
The team collected 315 old specs during March on behalf of the charity Vision Aid Overseas, VAO, and are continuing the appeal throughout the year. Collected glasses will be sent to the charity which raises funds by recycling the glasses in an environmentally-friendly way.
‘To have collected 315 specs in just one month is astonishing,’ said Kuldip Dosanjh, store director. ‘We really hope we can maintain this enthusiasm throughout the year as the charity makes such a difference to people who don’t have access to the same standards of eyecare as we do.’
Vision Aid Overseas is an international charity dedicated to fighting poverty by transforming access to eyecare in developing countries. 670 million people - 10% of the world's population - are disadvantaged by poor vision and a lack of glasses.
