Protect your eyes properly this summer with Specsavers

With the summer holidays in full swing (though our local weather can be challenging!) the Belfast Victoria Square team are urging local people to protect their eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays by getting their sunglasses checked in store.

CE kite mark and UV400

Sinead Donnelly, ophthalmic director at Specsavers Victoria Square said, ‘Many people are unaware that throwaway-fashionable sunglasses without the correct CE marks could endanger sight more than not wearing sunglasses at all. The dark lenses cause our pupils to widen and let more light in, but without the UV filter, this could increase the risk of certain conditions over the long term. Consumers need to look out for the CE kite mark and that sunglasses are marked UV400.’

Children’s eyes in the sun

'Children’s eyes are particularly at risk of damage as they have larger pupils and clearer lenses in the eye than adults which allows more UV to penetrate. Kids should wear sunglasses as soon as they will keep them on, normally from around the age of two.’

Non-prescription sunglasses

Specsavers launched its first ever range of non-prescription sunglasses last year featuring significant discounts for contact lens users. Designer brands include Karl Lagerfeld, Love Moschino and Max & Co.
