Putting staff development into focus
A career change half a decade ago has resulted in celebration for a newly qualified optician 27-year-old Samantha Roberts.
Samantha, started at Specsavers in Teignmouth when the store opened in 2008, and has become the latest staff member to obtain an optical qualification during employment at the store.
Simon Simmonds, store director said: ‘Sam was one of the original team members here and while she didn’t have any optical experience her passion for helping customers and learning new skills was apparent from the outset.’
Samantha joined as an optical assistant after being a customer service assistant for a high-street food retailer. She said she loves working in the industry: ‘Working as an optical assistant opened my eyes to a career in optics. I spoke to Simon about my next steps and decided that a course in dispensing optics would be the best move for me.
The support from my colleagues over the past three years has been amazing; I couldn’t have done it without them.’
Simon continued: ‘I’m so proud of Samantha, she’s worked really hard over the past three years and we’re delighted she’s passed her qualification. She’s a very enthusiastic and popular member of staff and I know she’ll be happy to help the other team members on the course she’s just passed.’
‘We feel our strength lies in the people we employ and we will always support passionate people like Samantha as they look to increase their skills and develop their careers.’
Three other team members at Teignmouth Specsavers are currently on professional development courses. Mike Weathersbee and Abi Irwin are doing an optical dispensing assistant course and Monelle Williams is undertaking the same course as Samantha.
