To mark the start of Dementia Awareness Week (15 – 21 May), staff from Specsavers in Portsmouth have undertaken training to help them provide better care to customers suffering from the condition.

Fully qualified

The team has been working in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Society charity to qualify as Dementia Friends.

A Dementia Friend takes part in video and practical training exercises to learn about all aspects of dementia, enabling them to turn this understanding into action.

Many staff members at the Portsmouth store have already completed the course, including clinic manager Melissa Van Herck (pictured), store manager Mihaela Ovadiuc and Chloe Merrivale. They have now been provided with badges to help customers easily identify them as a Dementia Friend in store.

Providing excellent service

Julia Moulton, store director at Specsavers Portsmouth, says: ‘We’re passionate about offering excellent customer service, and working with Dementia Friends is helping us provide an extra level of care for our customers.

'We’re extremely proud of the staff that have already received their qualifications.’
