Porthcawl opticians bakes for children’s charity
Specsavers in Porthcawl has raised money for a children’s cancer charity that helps young people suffering from the disease have a holiday in Wales.
Staff at the store, located on John Street, hosted a bake sale for Karavanz 4 the Kidz, raising £32. Customers were invited to buy the sweet treats and donate to the cause.
Karavanz 4 the Kidz is an initiative that was started by Paul Downes and Christian Evans.
The duo began fundraising in 2012 to buy a caravan in Trecco Bay, Porthcawl, which was then donated to LATCH, Wales’s children’s cancer charity.
Paul and Christian initiated the fundraising with the intention of providing a break for the families of children who were suffering from cancer. They are now leading the efforts to raise funds to buy more caravans so that more families and children can benefit from respite holidays.
Claire Edwards, store director of Specsavers in Porthcawl, said: ‘A cancer diagnosis is always a hugely traumatic time, and especially when it is a child. Quality family time is therefore essential to get away from the motions of daily life and have some all-important rest.
‘Specsavers is first and foremost a community opticians and we’re thrilled to be able to support organisations that help local people. I’d like to thank the team for their baking efforts and our customers for their donations; the money raised will help support families enjoy a much needed break in Porthcawl. ’
