A new focus has come to Derby Specsavers, as the team unveiled their health promotion zone last week.
The team in the Intu Centre can now help with overall wellbeing as well as eye health, as the store has become a Healthy Living Optical Practice. In a ground-breaking partnership with the public health team at the council, staff members have been trained to give advice and let people know about local services that are available for those who want to make lifestyle changes.
Eye health and overall health are connected, with smoking and obesity both being risk factors for sight loss, so it makes sense to be able to pick up information about wellbeing at the opticians.
The store has a health promotion zone which highlights national and local support to be healthier, including addressing obesity, mental wellbeing, stroke, dementia, smoking, and drug and alcohol abuse. From next month, blood pressure checks will also be available.
A word from the store director
Store director, Uan Gohil, said: ‘We’re passionate about health and wellbeing and when the council asked us if we wanted to be involved, we jumped at the opportunity.
‘Through our training with public health, we’ve learnt a lot about what’s available out there for the Derby community and it’s been an eyeopener for all of us. It’s great to be able to help people get the support they need to improve their lifestyle.’
