A Paisley resident has taken a step closer to winning the coveted Spectacle Wearer of the Year Award, with a grand prize of £10,000 and a luxury holiday in the Bahamas.
Lauren Haggarty, 20, from Millfield Hill, Erskine was selected from thousands of entries from across Scotland as a Scottish regional winner. She was presented with a bottle of champagne and gift voucher by dispensing assistant Kirsty McWhirter in the Specsavers Paisley store.
Known as the Oscars of the glasses world, the awards celebrate specs wearers from the UK and Republic of Ireland, across four age categories: 16 to 24; 25 to 39; 40 to 59 and 60 plus.
The broadcast production student will soon discover if she has made it through to the UK final for the chance to be crowned winner of her 16 to 24 age category or triumph as overall UK winner of Spectacle Wearer of the Year.
Lauren says: ‘I’m absolutely delighted to be part of SWOTY 2014. I spotted the Specsavers competition on Facebook one night and decided to enter, but I really didn’t expect to get this far.
‘I’m thrilled to be a regional finalist and will be saving my store vouchers for when I need a new pair of glasses.’
‘Getting through to the final would be fantastic – I’ve got my fingers crossed.’
Celebrating specs wearers on our doorstep
Store director Gail Thompson says: ‘We’re very proud of Lauren for having reached this stage in the competition. She looks fantastic in her glasses and it’s clear she really enjoys wearing them.
‘Spectacle Wearer of the Year gives people the opportunity to show off how great they look in their glasses and celebrates the specs wearers we have right on our doorstep in Paisley.’
The awards were launched by Girls Aloud singer and West End star Kimberley Walsh earlier this year, who Lauren could meet at the awards ceremony if she triumphs in her age category.
The awards will be held at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on Tuesday 7 October. All age category winners will win a VIP makeover, with one overall winner taking home the ultimate accolade in specs wearing.
