Students from the Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) Optics Society took home the Celtic Cup trophy after winning the sporting tournament in Nottingham last month.

Eighteen students from the society travelled down to the tournament to compete in three different sports; netball, volleyball and football, against other participating university societies from across the UK.

The GCU team received a £2,000 sponsorship from the Specsavers Scotland division, which helped them travel down to the Celtic Cup event, as well as equipping them with matching team strips.

Harris Hamilton, president of the GCU Optics Society, said: ‘I would like to thank Specsavers yet again for their ongoing support to the GCU Optics Society. Being able to offer events, like the Celtic Cup, to our society is really exciting and it’s great to know we have Specsavers’ sponsorship behind us. It was the icing on the cake that we managed to win the tournament and bring home the trophy.’

Arlene Stevenson, spokesperson for Specsavers Scotland, said: ‘It was great news that the GCU Optics Society team won the Celtic Cup. They are a really enthusiastic group of students that will be our next generation of optometrists, and as a region, Specsavers Scotland love helping them out when we can.’
