Brave staff at Specsavers in Norris Green faced their fears last week when they participated in a charity skydive for a local hospice which provides palliative care for people with terminal illnesses.

Looking after the terminally ill

Woodlands Hospice Charitable Trust is an independent charity committed to delivering the best possible practice and development of specialist palliative care for people with cancer and other life limiting illnesses.

As well as caring for many people in the local area, Woodlands Hospice has also provided support to the families of some of the Norris Green staff.

Linda McCartney, an optical assistant at Specsavers in Norris Green was one of the brave staff members participating in the sponsored skydive to raise cash for the hospice.

Danielle Steventon an optician at the Broadway-based optician, joined Linda in what was the first skydive for both of them which led them to raise £1000 in sponsorship for the hospice.

Linda says: 'I was particularly keen to take part in the skydive as my grandfather, who suffered from terminal cancer, spent the last few weeks of his life at the hospice earlier this year, and he was very well looked after there.

‘The donations we received were really generous, and despite being terrified ahead of my first ever skydive, I also felt incredibly proud that Danielle and I managed to raise cash for such a brilliant place, all in all it was an intense and quite emotional experience.’

Funding vital services

Carole Riley, Individual Giving Manager at Woodland Hospice says: ‘We were delighted that Specsavers in Norris Green chose to support the hospice and face their fears in a sponsored skydive. Not only have they raised a brilliant amount of money for us to fund vital services, the staff has also helped us to create even awareness about the hospice too.’

Fundraisers who donate a minimum of £1,000 in any one year to the Woodland Hospice are invited to have a brass leaf engraved and placed on its 'Tree of Life', a permanent display of charity partners in the communal area of the hospice.
