Eyecare experts in Putney pedalled to success in the LA Fitness Capital to Coast Cycle, raising almost £4,000 in aid of the Down’s Syndrome Association.

Six team members from Specsavers in Putney joined 14 colleagues from Specsavers stores in Kington upon Thames and Surbiton and rode 60 miles from London to Brighton on Sunday 28 June.

The 20-strong team smashed their original £3,000 target, raising a total of £3,943.05 for the charity, based in nearby Hampton Wick.

A word from the store director

Guy Loveday, store director of Specsavers in Kingston upon Thames, Surbiton and Putney, said: ‘For people with Down’s syndrome, eyecare is a very important issue – up to 50 per cent of the 40,000 people in the UK living with Down’s syndrome will have to wear glasses. As eyecare specialists, having a charity such as the Down’s Syndrome Association on our doorstep in Hampton Wick motivated us to raise awareness of the needs of those with Down’s syndrome and support this wonderful charity.

‘The race was testing for us all and, although we encountered some challenges along the way, we were spurred on by the knowledge that our efforts were raising awareness and vital funds.

We’ve been overwhelmed at the response from the community and have far surpassed our fundraising expectations. A huge thank you to you all.’

A word from the charity

Alison Morgan, fundraising manager at The Down’s Syndrome Association, added: ‘We are absolutely delighted with the support we have received from so many local Specsavers and are very impressed that they took on such a tough challenge. They have raised a huge amount in a short period of time and this money will go directly towards vital services for children and adults with Down’s syndrome.’

The Down’s Syndrome Association is a UK-wide charity which supports people with Down’s syndrome, their families and carers. Its services include a helpline; information; support programmes; training and assessment services.
