The team at Specsavers in Girlington recently lent its support to a performance workshop as part of an initiative by local mental health charity Mind in Bradford.

Expert tuition from professional opera singer
Having been coached on a weekly basis by David Owen-Lewis, a former member of the Opera North cast, a group from Mind in Bradford put on a performance for families and friends at Bradford Town Hall on 31 March.

The team at Specsavers in Bradford and Girlington made a contribution towards the hire of the hall and the provision of refreshments at the event.

A word from the director
Pete Rooke, director of both stores, commented: ‘To stand up and sing unaccompanied in front of family and friends is a huge achievement for those who suffer from low self-esteem and the confidence issues associated with mental illness. It was an inspirational and very moving event and we were thrilled to help make it possible.’

Singing as therapy
Christine Clavering, Mind in Bradford’s Acting Chief Officer, commented: ‘It’s wonderful to witness the talent of our Mindsong performers, inspired by the amazing David Owen-Lewis. This singing for pleasure group is the best therapy we can offer.’
