A member of the team at Swadlincote Specsavers is on track for a rewarding career in eyecare thanks to an apprenticeship.

Career opportunity

Gemma Foster, who recently graduated from the Optical Apprenticeship programme, will now take on a full-time role in the store. As an optical assistant, Gemma will support the team in delivering excellent eyecare for customers.

‘When I came across the opportunity to combine studying with on the job training with Specsavers, it seemed like something I’d enjoy because I’d be working towards a recognised qualification and earning money at the same time,’ said Gemma. ‘Getting to know our customers over the past year has been great and I’m looking forward to putting all of my learning to use going forward.

‘Since completing my apprenticeship, I’ve also passed the first term of my Cert 3 training, which puts me on track to becoming a dispensing optician in a few years.’

Service is key

Rajesh Patel, store director, said: ‘Our customers are at the heart of what we do, so we pride ourselves on ensuring our team is able to offer the very best service. Apprenticeships are a fantastic way of doing that, while also supporting people to secure a career in the optical industry.

‘Gemma’s determination and passion is great to have in store to help deliver excellent service for each of our customers, so we’re really pleased to have her on board as an optical assistant now she’s graduated.’

The Specsavers Optical Apprenticeship programme is the UK’s largest government-accredited scheme with more than 240 people enrolled and includes the completion of the Level 2 Diploma in Optics.
