Fetching hats helped raised funds for brain tumour research

Staff at Specsavers in Norris Green tipped their hats to charity Brain Tumour Research, after they took part in a national fundraising campaign at the store on Friday 28 March. 

The team at Specsavers on Broadway each paid £2 each to don their favourite headgear for ‘Wear a Hat Day’ by fundraising instore throughout the day, raising a total of £70 for the worthwhile cause.

The day created added fun to the day and the customers all enjoyed the variety of hats that were worn by staff at the store. One customer even mistook the store director for a chauffeur in his black peaked hat!

Linda McCartney, optical assistant at the store led the effort, and as well as wearing an unusual collection of hats to raise cash, staff at the store sold cakes, wrist bands and pin badges to help to raise awareness. Customers were generous with their donations and together the staff in-store and local community raised their total of £70 for Brain Tumour Research.

How fundraising helps Brain Tumour Research

Donations will help to fund the work carried out by scientists at Brain Tumour Research’s Centres of Excellence, who are investigating brain tumours to find more effective treatments and ultimately a cure. 

Research into brain tumours receives less than one per cent of national cancer research spending in the UK, yet the disease kills more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer.

Importance of regular eye tests 

An eye test at your local opticians can be the first step towards diagnosis for anyone unknowingly suffering with the symptoms of a brain tumour, and so the cause is one which means a great deal to the store.

Paul Stanway, store director at Specsavers Norris Green, says: ‘We wanted to take part in Wear a Hat Day as soon as it was brought to our attention that 16,000 people each year are diagnosed with a brain tumour and the research is severely underfunded.’

‘We have a digital retinal camera in-store which is used as part of a standard eye test to photograph the optic nerve at the back of the eye. We are trained to treat a swollen optic nerve as a danger sign; one of the problems it can signify is a brain tumour.’

‘By fundraising for Brain Tumour Research we are helping to ensure improved outcomes for those who have been diagnosed with the condition, thanks to the excellent work of the charity.’

Bringing everyone together to create awareness

Sue Farrington Smith, Chief Executive of Brain Tumour Research, comments: ‘From school children in sombreros to nurses in night caps, Wear a Hat Day represents the coming together of the brain tumour community to raise funds, but is also a great message of solidarity and support for the patients and families whose lives have been devastated by brain tumours. Brain Tumour Research is extremely grateful to everybody for supporting Wear a Hat Day, and in particular Specsavers in Norris Green.
