As part of National Apprenticeship Week (4-10 March) Specsavers employee Aurelija Cekaite is talking about how an apprenticeship with the local opticians set her on her career path.
The 23-year-old, who lives in Beccles, was unsure what to do after finishing college when she saw the opportunity for an apprenticeship scheme at Specsavers in Norwich on White Lion Street in 2015. After an interview at the store Aurelija was offered the job and started learning new skills from both the clinical and dispensing sides of the business to retail.
She said: ‘I wanted a job in retail and as a customer, I had thought that Specsavers had always been a great environment. When I started work I realised just how interesting optics is and decided it was the career for me.’
On her way to becoming a dispensing optician
Since finishing her apprenticeship, Aurelija has passed two more qualifications in dispensing – CERT 3 and CERT 4. She plans on beginning a course to become a dispensing optician later this year, which usually takes three years but via a Specsavers’ Pathway course will only take two.
Aurelija continued: ‘Doing an apprenticeship really helped me gain new skills and knowledge, as well as help to build my confidence. It’s changed my life and put me on an exciting career path.’
General manager at Specsavers in Norwich, David Cowan said: ‘We’re always looking for great team members to join us at both our stores at White Lion Street and St. Stephens Street. Training is something we prioritise highly at Specsavers and support fully as far as our team members want to go.’
Always looking for great team members
‘Aurelija has been a great addition to the team and is truly one of our success stories. We have no doubt that she has a bright future in optics.’
There are several different apprenticeship opportunities with the scheme open to anyone from the age of 16, including recent school or college leavers or those looking for a new challenge – all that is required is a grade D or higher in GCSE Maths and English.
Training lasts for 13 months and many of those – 94% across the whole business – take on a full-time role at Specsavers when they have finished their training.
