Apprentices Alec, Chelsea and Neve have their eye on fulfilling optical careers – and are urging other young people to follow their lead as an apprentice. This month has seen National Apprenticeship Week, with a wide range of Taunton organisations announcing opportunities for local young people. All three apprentices are completing apprenticeships at the Taunton Specsavers store.

A word from the apprentices

Alec Booker, aged 26 said: ‘Working here in Taunton is like a massive family and I would be lost without the support that I have had. I have gained the confidence and the skills to work in the optical industry thanks to this incredible apprenticeship. I had struggled to find a job that fit me but found it with this apprenticeship.’

Specsavers has taken on 2,000 apprentices to date across the UK and Ireland. Opportunities range from intermediate to degree and masters level, as well as across different areas of the business. This includes optical and audiology schemes, within the company’s support offices and manufacturing and distribution sites.

Twenty-five year old Chelsea Vincer is also really enjoying her role, she said: ‘At 25 I thought that I would be too old to start an apprenticeship. I had known people who had taken it up straight from school and had done really well. As well as taking on a role that would challenge me I also wanted a job where I was helping people every day and this apprenticeship certainly does that.’

Twenty-year-old Neve said: ‘It has opened up so many options for me and I would highly recommend anyone thinking of taking up an apprenticeship to do it, you won’t regret it.’

Growing local talent

Emma Denham, Taunton Specsavers store director, said: ‘We have had huge success with Alec, Neve and Chelsea in their apprenticeships. They really highlight to us the importance of developing young local people. We are advocates of ‘growing our own’ and the apprenticeship scheme is the first step in developing individuals and securing their future within the optical profession.'
