Apprentice Rebecca Wilkinson has her eye on a fulfilling career as a dispensing optician – and she is urging other young people to follow her lead as an apprentice. This month has seen National Apprenticeship Week, with a wide range of Brixham organisations announcing opportunities for local young people.

Twenty-two-year-old Rebecca recently completed her apprenticeship at the Brixham Specsavers store, where she is now working with many local customers to help them with their sight issues.

She said: ‘Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to find a profession that suits them. The Specsavers apprentice scheme is great – it really tests you to the fullest. My job is enjoyable because I get to experience all the customer interactions. There is a lot of variety within the store, and I'm always doing and learning something different. ‘I enjoy working with all the customers because they have so many different needs. Customers will come in to store and ask me questions, and I need to know the answers to best help them.’

Huge Success

Rebecca began her Specsavers apprenticeship in October 2018 and completed it in November 19.

Julie Zberowski, Brixham Specsavers store director, said: ‘We have had huge success with Rebecca in her apprenticeship. She really highlights to us the importance of developing young local people. We are advocates of ‘growing our own’ and the apprenticeship scheme is the first step in developing individuals and securing their future within the optical profession. ‘Rebecca has integrated herself within the team wonderfully. Her customer care is great, and she is really developing key skills that will help with her career aspirations to be a dispensing optician. She shows high levels of customer care and is attentive to the individual needs our customers have.’
