Clear-sighted apprentice Connor has his eyes on a fulfilling career in the optical industry – and is urging other young people to follow his lead as an apprentice.

This month has seen National Apprenticeship Week, with a wide range of Tiverton organisations announcing opportunities for local young people. Twenty-year-old Connor Richards started as the store's first apprentice last year and has enjoyed working with many local patients to help them with their sight issues.

A word from the apprentice

Connor said: ‘Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to find a profession that suits them. The Specsavers apprentice scheme is great – it really tests you to the fullest. My job is enjoyable because I get to experience all the customer interactions. There is a lot of variety within the store, and I'm always doing and learning something different.’

Connor added: ‘I enjoy working with all the customers because they have so many different needs. They will come in to store and ask me questions, and I need to know the answers to best help them.’

Homegrown talent

Emma Denham, the store director, said: ‘We have had huge success with Connor as our first apprentice here in Tiverton. Since completing this Conner is one of our top dispensers and he will be embarking on cert 3 this year. His end goal is to become a dispensing optician. We are advocates of ‘growing our own’ and the apprenticeship scheme is the first step in developing individuals and securing their future within the optical profession. Connor has integrated themselves within the team wonderfully. His patient care is great, and he is really developing key skills that will help with his career aspirations. He is showing high levels of patient care and is attentive to the individual needs our patients have.’
