Newport finalists have the specs factor
Two women from Newport have been chosen out of hundreds of people across Wales as regional finalists for Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year.
Helen Beveridge, 49, and Elizabeth Fitzgerald, 59, could win £10,000 and a luxury holiday in the Bahamas as well as a chance to mingle with the stars at the 20th annual Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards.
Helen and Elizabeth were invited to visit their local Newport Specsavers stores on Spytty Road and High Street to each receive a bottle of champagne, a certificate and a £150 glasses voucher.
‘In it to win it’
Helen said: ‘I believe you have to be in it to win it and I am both surprised and excited to be representing Wales as a regional finalist.’
Elizabeth said: ‘I decided to enter Spectacle Wearer of the Year after noticing that the competition helps raise money for Kidscape, the anti-bullying charity for children.’
‘Fantastic semi-finalists for Wales’
Jason Williams, store director of Specsavers in Newport, said: ‘It’s fantastic to have not one, but two finalists from Newport. Both Helen and Elizabeth really enjoy wearing their frames and we hope that their confidence will inspire other spectacle-wearers to don their glasses with pride.
‘We think both are fantastic semi-finalists for Wales, and all the team at Newport wish them the very best of luck for the next round of judging for this year’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition.’
The awards were launched by Spice Girls singer and Heart FM DJ Emma Bunton earlier this year. If either lady triumphs in their age category, Mrs Beveridge or Mrs Fitzgerald could meet Emma at the celeb-packed awards ceremony at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on Tuesday 6 October.
