Newlands commitment to youth employment recognised
The team at Newlands have recently been awarded the Investors in Young People (IIYP) Gold Accreditation, recognising its outstanding work in employing and training young team members.
Specsavers Newlands’ employment of young talent led to the IIYP Gold accreditation and gained praise from Scotland’s Employability and Training Minister Jamie Hepburn, who presented the store with the award.
He said: ‘It was a pleasure to visit Specsavers to hear about their excellent work to support young people into rewarding jobs and congratulate them on their IIYP Gold award. It is a well-deserved recognition of their excellent work and commitment to supporting youth employment.
Supporting young people
‘The Scottish Government is committed to supporting all of Scotland’s young people towards and into employment. We are transforming young people’s prospects and have taken early action to lead a concerted effort, alongside local authorities, to develop Scotland’s young workforce.’
Scotland’s only people management award focusing on employers’ recruitment and retention of young people, the IIYP Gold accreditation is a fantastic achievement for the store which employs seven young people within the team.
With youth unemployment in Scotland higher than the entire employment rate, Specsavers Newlands has worked closely with the Scottish Government to develop talent for long term succession planning while understanding future customer needs.
A word from our store manager
Lynne Johnston, store manager at Specsavers Newlands, said: ‘Investors in young people supports organisations from across the private, public, and third sectors to assist them in meeting their aims and objections by engaging and developing young talent.
‘At Specsavers we believe in the future of youth talent. As a team we have developed frameworks to build and focus our activity around youth employment which has been hugely successful.
‘Our store achieved the Gold standard as we indicate higher performance in people management which is something we are extremely proud of and will continue to build.’
