Derry~Londonderry Specsavers store directors Sean McCauley and Maeve Walsh have invested £200,000 and created nine additional jobs with the opening of a new store in Derry’s Crescent Link retail park in the Waterside area of the city.
Local Derry residents, Maeve and Sean own the existing Specsavers cityside store located on Ferryquay Street.
45 people employed in total by both stores
The new store takes the total number of local people employed by Specsavers in Derry to 45. It is the twenty-third Specsavers store to open in Northern Ireland.
Optometry director Sean McCauley, who is also Chair of Specsavers in Northern Ireland, said: ‘This year marks our 25th year in Derry~Londonderry and we felt the time was right to expand our optical and audiology services and offer greater accessibility to local people in the Waterside area and the towns and villages beyond.’
Popular new location
‘As a relatively new retail park, Crescent Link has become extremely popular and has easy access for those travelling into Derry from Limavady, Dungiven, New Buildings, Magheramason, Claudy, Donemana and Eglinton.’
‘This investment is very much due to customer demand and both stores will operate as Specsavers Derry with staff working between both stores and with one online and telephone booking service for both stores.’
Dispensing optician and store director Maeve Walsh said: ‘Our Ferryquay Street store is a very busy one and our new store location will, we believe, be of huge benefit to both existing and new customers. The nine new jobs are a mix of optometrists, optical assistants, an office administrator and a lab technician.’
Additional investment in Ferryquay Street
‘In addition to our new store expansion, Sean and I are also investing £15K in store upgrades at Ferryquay Street including new phones and computer systems, laboratory and office administration areas.’
