Businesses and individuals who play an active role in supporting the British Sri Lankan community are being invited to enter this year’s BRISLA (The British Sri Lankan Association) Awards.

Now in its fifth year, the BRISLA Awards is a well-recognised date in the annual calendar, garnering support from leading dignitaries who strive for diversity and social cohesion in today’s challenging society.

What is BRISLA?

BRISLA is a non-profit organisation that aims to facilitate cooperation and build partnerships between the UK and Sri Lanka around issues including education, environmental factors and health affairs.

To reflect its growing stature and positive impact on society, the Awards will be held in at the Houses of Parliament in October 2019.  Dr Ahmed Sivardeen, chairman of BRISLA and store director at Specsavers New Malden comments:  ‘We are delighted to hold our event at such a prestigious venue in 2019.  This iconic London landmark represents positive change and progress and is an active voice for the nation. The synergies between our chosen Awards venue and what BRISLA stands for are very evident and we expect it to be one of our most successful years yet.’

Dr Sivardeen proceeds over the judging process and is always extremely impressed by the personal stories of entrants and the calibre of entries.   This year, in times of great change and uncertainty, he hopes that the Awards will inspire others and will remind people how supportive and effective communities can be when facing adversity.

He comments:  ‘There are many selfless acts from businesses and individuals that make a real impact in UK communities and also oversees, encouraging a more prosperous society for our fellow Sri Lankans.

‘The BRISLA Awards are one small step towards recognising and praising these achievements.  There will always be an ongoing need to promote diversity, inclusiveness and opportunities for everyone regardless of ethnicity and one’s background.  Winners from our Awards demonstrate how this can be achieved and we hope they will motivate others to follow their lead.’
