Specsavers in Newport is celebrating after being recognised at a national awards ceremony for the success of its store.

Winning the ‘Multiple Practice of the Year’ category at the Optician Awards, the Friars Walk store beat off competition from four shortlisted practices across the UK as the best optical outlet that had demonstrated its clinical, commercial and community achievements.

‘So thrilled to have received this’

‘We’re all so thrilled to have received this award,’ says store director, Craig MacKenzie. ‘Everything we do here at Friars Walk is with a view to improving the care given to members of our community, so it means an awful lot to be crowned the best in the UK at doing so.

‘This award is the icing on the cake for our team after a challenging, yet rewarding couple of years. Whether it’s supporting local charities, collaborating with other healthcare providers, or investing in our staff and equipment - we are proud to provide an essential service that looks after our customers’ eye and ear health.’

No stranger to accolades

The store is no stranger to accolades, having recently scooped the ‘Special Award in Clinical Excellence’ at Specsavers’ national award ceremony, in which it was recognised for its collaboration with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board to open an Ophthalmic Diagnostic Treatment Centre (ODTC), with funding from the Welsh Government.

The ODTC, which opened in September 2016, sees Specsavers optometrists provide initial screening and referrals for people with symptoms of Wet Age-related Macular Degeneration (Wet AMD). NHS staff deliver treatment for the condition from the same high street location.

Held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole and presented by comedienne, Debra Stephenson, Specsavers in Haverfordwest was also recognised, picking up the award for Enhanced Optical Service.
