Motherwell welcomes sporting stars
Specsavers in Motherwell received a visit from a hard-working mum of two – and some of the talented young footballers she supports.
Clare Louise McDonald – the woman at the helm of Cambusnethan Talbot Community FC – has been named as a finalist in the Community Champion category in this year’s Daily Record Great Scot Awards. Specsavers in Brandon Parade South is the category sponsor and members of the public nominated potential Community Champions through their local Specsavers stores or online.
The category recognises individuals or groups who have shown incredible commitment to improving the lives of people in their local area.
As well as being mum to James, nine, and Steven, five, Clare Louise looks out for more than 200 youngsters aged three to 10 in her work with Cambusnethan Talbot Community FC. Clare Louise has taken on the role of team coach, team chauffeur, kit washer, first aider and tea lady – and she balances her job in admin with all her other responsibilities in life to help the youngsters reach their goals.
When staff at the Motherwell store heard that Clare Louise had reached the final, they invited her and the youngsters from the team into the Brandon Parade South store to offer their congratulations and wish them good luck.
Clare Louise said: ‘I am absolutely overwhelmed to be nominated. I would love to win for the kids - without them there wouldn’t be a club. It is a great honour to be nominated alongside such fantastic people who do amazing work in their communities.
‘Football is a big part of life for a lot of children and young people. Being part of a club like this not only helps to keep them fit and healthy - it helps them build a strong network of friends. The club is at the centre of everything I do and I’m very proud to be involved.’
Set up in 1999, the club also welcomes adult players.
Along with husband Steven, Clare Louise has also set up a disability academy in the community after completing the Scottish Football Association course in coaching footballers with disabilities.
Inspiration to young people
Specsavers Motherwell store director Ian Moss said: ‘It was great to meet Clare Louise and the youngsters from the team. Clare Louise does a fantastic job and has helped to inspire and support so many children and young people over the years.
‘We’re delighted that she has made it to the final stages and wish her all the best in the competition.’
The overall award winners will be announced at a star-studded awards ceremony hosted by newspaper columnist and newsreader Jackie Bird in the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow on Saturday 17 October.
