Staff in Minehead are inviting locals to book in for an eye examination in support of Diabetes Awareness Week (12-18 June).
Preventable sight loss
There are 3.9m known diabetes sufferers in Britain. Around 30 per cent of diabetics will develop some sort of diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to blindness. However, if diabetic retinopathy is detected early and treated, blindness can be prevented in 90 per cent of cases.
Seeing the signs
Philippa Hales, store director, says: ‘Eye examinations can detect signs of diabetes and help save diabetics’ sight. By examining your retina an optometrist can also detect eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma.’
‘At least half a million diabetics are unaware that they have the condition and may remain undiagnosed for up to 10 years. In fact an eye test at Specsavers can be the first indicator of the disease.’
