Amy Houlston and Amy Sinclair from Milton Keynes are raising awareness of apprenticeships.

Both Amy’s left school and joined the Specsavers apprenticeship scheme in September 2018 following recommendations from family members.

Starting a career

Amy Houlston said: ‘At the time I was keen to continue my education, but it needed to be with the aim of building a career and getting a job. Working at Specsavers Milton Keynes every day is different, so I was able to learn a lot on the job while earning. Following my apprenticeship, I went on to do the Cert 3 training. I hope to continue with my Cert 4 and then qualify as a dispensing optician.’

Rewarding work

Amy Sinclair joined Specsavers at the same time. Amy adds: ‘I had a keen interest in maths and science-based learning, but I wasn’t keen on more study. My aunt is an optometrist so gave me a great insight into her career and the opportunities. I’m also now doing my cert 3.

‘Working and studying is hard work, but it is also hugely rewarding. Seeing my name on a customer feedback survey boosted my confidence and made me feel I had made a difference.’

A word from the director

Steve Moore, Specsavers Milton Keynes store director, said: ‘Both Amy’s have been great additions to the team and offering them full-time employment when they passed their apprenticeships was never a question. We’re more than happy to support their future ambitions and maybe one day they’ll even have their own Specsavers stores.’
