A Mexborough optician has issued a warning about glaucoma, the leading cause of preventable blindness in the UK, during National Glaucoma Awareness Week (6-12 June).

Early diagnosis is key
Andy Bryer, store director at Mexborough Specsavers says: ‘Glaucoma is a terrible condition to live with but thanks to vital research there are now treatments and solutions available. Early diagnosis is key, so we’re urging anyone who is regularly suffering from misty vision, intense pain or tender eyes to come and visit us in store.'

It is estimated that around 500,000 people across England and Wales have glaucoma but many more may be unaware that they are slowly losing their sight due to the condition1.

The disease can be treated, and 95 per cent of those who are diagnosed in the early stages of glaucoma maintain good sight throughout their lives. However, regular eye examinations are absolutely vital to detect the disease early and prevent any loss of sight.

The thief of sight
Janice Weller, ophthalmic director at Mexborough Specsavers says: ‘It is just so important to have your eyes tested regularly, at least once every two years. Glaucoma is often called ‘the thief of sight’, because the condition can become quite advanced before you even notice any symptoms.

‘We particularly want to reach out to Mexborough residents who are over 40, have a family history of glaucoma, are of Afro-Caribbean descent or suffer from diabetes, poor circulation, migraines, short-sightedness or eye injuries, as these groups are at an increased risk of developing the disease.’
