Specsavers in Reading is one of the oldest, and largest, Specsavers stores in the UK. It first opened its doors in 1985 with six members of staff. That number has now grown to over 80. The store is co-owned by Ravi Bhardwaj, who was one of the first ever opticians to be employed by the Specsavers brand, and Don Watts who has been with the business for over 15 years.

Hearing Centre

The Hearing Centre is a really important part of the store’s offering. Hearing Director Rita Vara has been in charge of Hearcare in the Reading store since its conception. The hearing team is continuing to grow year-on-year and in addition to four fully qualified audiologists, Rita is in the process of training two new Hearcare assistants and two new hearing aid dispensers.

Mark – Retail Manager

Mark is currently in his eighteenth year at Specsavers Reading.

Mark said: ‘I’m a Reading boy, born and bred, so my career with Specsavers started as an optical assistant nearly 20 years ago. I was only 19 at the time and it was a great way to earn money and learn a new skill as well.

The training has always been so thorough and has taught me to always keep my standards high when it comes to customer care. My favourite part of the job is the appreciation we receive for the high levels of care and service we provide each day.’

Mark enjoys gardening, supporting reading football club, walking his dog harry and spending time with his children.

Neela – Contact Lens Optician

Neela is one of the longest serving members of staff at the store having been with us for over 18 years.

Neela said: ‘I can’t believe how quickly my time at the store has gone. In 2020, I’ll be marking my twentieth year with Specsavers. I joined the Specsavers team in Reading after qualifying from university and haven’t looked back since.

Every day is different and challenging and I love coming into the store and not knowing how the day will pan out. It keeps you on your toes! My favourite part of the job is meeting new people each day and working with a team that feels like family.’

Sara – Optometrist

Sara joined us in October 2015 following completing her Master’s degree with Manchester University where in her final year she was awarded the 2015 Naylor Prize for her research in tonometry methods.

Sara said: 'I enjoy my work at Specsavers greatly, from meeting new people each day to facing new challenges.'

Sara enjoys baking and face-painting in her spare time
