Meet the Director: Q & A with Gurjit Singh Sehmi
How long have you been with Specsavers?
I have been working for Specsavers since 2007.
Has optometry always been your background? If not what did you do previously?
Since qualifying in 2006, I have remained in optometry.
What made you go into optometry and what are your qualifications?
My initial interest in optometry was ignited by my love of science and the ways in which it could provide answers and reasons for so many things that we do without even thinking. This in turn led me to think about optometry and the importance of eyesight and vision in our day to day lives. I have a first class degree with honours in Optometry from City University, London. I have also won many awards during my academic studies.
Where were you born/raised?
I was born and raised in East London, a real life Eastender!
What is your favourite part about the job?
The best part of the job for me is getting to interact with different people every day and helping each individual with their eye care needs. It is always fantastic to see new patients as well as the regulars that I have been seeing for a few years now. To detect and diagnose life threatening problems to save lives have been the most rewarding experiences for me in my job.
What are your personal interests?
I have a keen interest in motorsports and am an avid fan of Formula 1. I also enjoy football and cricket. I love travelling and experiencing different places and cultures by spending time in other countries. I regularly go to the Gurdwara (Sikh Temple) and enjoy reading about the religion’s fascinating history and rich musical heritage.
