Meet Leigh Nelson, Retail Director and Dispensing Optician for the Newtownards store, located in High Street, Newtownards. Read on to find out more about Leigh and your local opticians.
Tell us a bit about yourself:
My name is Leigh Nelson, I am the retail director and one of two dispensing opticians at the Newtownards Specsavers store. I am married to David who is our lab manager and we have two boys aged nine and twelve.
How did you come to run a Specsavers Store?
I began working with Specsavers back in 1996. I wanted a hands-on role where I could be my own boss and as a dispensing optician I provide help and assistance to people who have eye-related issues and problems.
Do you wear specs?
I am going to be very honest when I say that I wore glasses and contacts for 20 years. A number of years ago I had laser eye surgery on both eyes and I haven’t ‘looked’ back (pardon the pun). However, I do miss the funky aspect of wearing the stylish frames that Specsavers offers. My own favourite would be the Osiris range that we have in store.
What is the best part of your job?
I love the children that come into the store. We have a large kids base and a great connection with our local schools in the area. As David and I have a child who has ASD and ADHD, we appreciate how stressful it is to have your child’s eyes tested and be able to sort their needs. As a result the entire team at the Ards store understand the challenges that treating children can pose and try to make it fun! As a dispensing optician it’s my job to ensure the kids are fitted correctly and to supervise all the dispensers so they confidently enjoy working with all of the children that visit the store.
How many members of staff work in Newtownards?
We have 17 staff members at the store.
What should people do if they require an eye test?
Customers can phone the store directly on Phone 02891 814280 to make an appointment. Alternatively, they can simply call in store and speak to one of our professionally trained staff who would be more than happy to assist them with their query.
