Meet the director - Craig Daker
Craig Daker is store director of Specsaevers in The Gyle shopping centre, Edinburgh. Read on to find out more about Craig and your local opticians...
Tell us a bit about yourself:
I'm 39 and moved to Scotland in 2008 to open the store. I now live in Kinross with my wife and our cat. I'm originally from Wolverhampton in the West Midlands where my family still live, but lived in Wiltshire for 10 years before I came to Scotland. I enjoy hill walking around Kinross, and visiting places of historical interest.
How did you come to run a Specsavers store?
I started in optics in the early '90s as a lab tech before becoming a dispensing optician, and store manager at the store in Bath.
Do you wear specs, and if so, what is your favourite style?
I've got lots of specs, but I have now started to wear varifocals for the first time and they're amazingly good! I prefer plastic frames for comfort as I wear my specs all day, and currently wear Timberland 1252, a plastic material with a brown / tortoiseshell finish. I also have a Boss Orange sunglasses with polarised lenses for driving.
Tell us about your job and the experience you have:
My job is amazingly varied but is all about people, which I love - developing the team, and ensuring customers receive the best care possible as well as having an enjoyable visit. We're a close knit team and often socialise outside of work, getting involved in fund raising and charity events together.
Why is it so important to get your eyes checked regularly?
It is crucial to ensure a sight examination is conducted at least every 2 years; not only is it important to see as clearly as possible, but is also a valuable eye health check. Lots of conditions such as diabetes can be detected from performing an eye examination. Our opticians always carry out a comprehensive eye health check.
