Erin Riddell, Specsavers Wishaw

Tell us a bit about yourself

I was born and bred in Motherwell and I’m married with two kids. How long have you been with the company? I started with Specsavers as an optical assistant 12 years ago while I was at university studying for my degree.

How did you come to run a Specsavers store?

My first job was in the Motherwell store. I completed my pre-registration year at the Livingston store and worked there for 11 years. I’ve since worked my way through the management academy to become a Partner and was lucky enough to get a store close to home.

What does your job at Specsavers involve?

I am responsible for looking after the eyesight of customers and also for a team of 12 staff. I’m in test rooms with patients for much of the day and also assist customers on the shop floor.

What is the best part of your role?

I love my job. I love working with the public and meeting new people from all walks of life with different stories to tell. It’s also great to see the youngsters that we test growing up as they return every two years. I like to think we grow as a business as our customers do. I love what Specsavers as a company stands for.

What does an eye test involve? We check for any visual problems that a patient may have and address how we can correct them – that can take the form of glasses or contact lenses or both. It also involves an assessment of the health of the eye, which can highlight health problems that may otherwise have gone undetected. It’s vital that people get their eyes checked at regular intervals by a registered optometrist. Every patient will also have a photograph of the eye taken at each visit.

Does your store also offer hearcare?

We have an audiologist in store every second Wednesday and we offer a free hearing screening service in store seven days a week.

Who should consider getting a hearing test?

We advise anyone over the age of 18 who feels they may have hearing loss to pop along for a screener check. This is free and only takes a few minutes.

How can patients book an eye or hearing test?

Appointments can be booked in person or by telephone. We are open seven days a week.
