Meet the Consett Director Gary Baker
Tell us a bit about yourself
I’m 53 years old and live in Sunderland. I love the outdoors and when I’m not at work I enjoy walking, climbing and canoeing.
How long have you been with the company?
I have worked in optics for 27 years and have been with Specsavers for 20 years.
How did you come to run a Specavers store?
I was a miner and made redundant when the pit I was working in closed down. I thought my skills might lead me to become a tradesman – and I also applied to ABDO (Association of British Dispensing Opticians) as I looked for new opportunities and was accepted. The rest, as they say, is history.
What does job involve?
I’m a dispensing director, which sounds very formal but simply demonstrates that as well as being the director of the store I am also an optician. This means I work with patients each day and also manage the day-to-day running of the store.
What is the best part of your role?
I really enjoy children’s dispensing. Enabling a child to see clearly so they can do well at school, play sports and fully share experiences with their friends and family is really satisfying. And the choice of kids’ frames at Specsavers is so good that children look great in their specs!
