Meet the Director
Optometrist Ebahi Demi-Ejegi is the store director at Specsavers in Sidcup. Here, she fills us in on her favourite parts of the job and how she got to where she is today.
How long have you been with Specsavers?
I’ve been at Specsavers for almost 15 years now, having first started in August 2002.
Has optometry always been your background?
Yes, I’ve always been interested in healthcare and optics was just a natural path for me really.
Where were you born/raised?
I was born in Harlow, Essex and now live in Sidcup.
What qualifications do you have?
I have a Bachelor of Science qualification in Optometry.
Why did you go into optometry?
I went into optometry because I have always been interested in having a career in healthcare and I wanted to see how I could help people of all ages and backgrounds achieve a better quality of life.
Eyesight is a hugely important aspect of our everyday life and in helping to maintain and improve the ocular health of the patients I see on a daily basis, I feel extremely fulfilled at the end of every working day.
What is your favourite part of the job?
The best part of the job for me is meeting new people. I’m a person who thrives off of the social environment that we have within our store and I get to meet a wide range of interesting people from all walks of life. Being able to improve their vision and, in doing so, their quality of life is a real added bonus.’
I also love the fact that my job is incredibly varied. I can go from carrying out eye examinations of patients of all ages, whether they’re three or 93, to carrying out contact lens assessments and check-ups. I also deliver enhanced optical services like cataracts and glaucoma assessments. No day is ever the same here.
What are your personal interests?
I’d say that my main interests are reading and travelling, although unfortunately I don’t get to travel half as often as I used to because of work and family commitments. I also love working with children and enjoy helping out in my daughter’s class once a week on my day off.
