Mayoress of Bracknell shocked that residents put boiler ahead of eye health
Mayoress meets store director, Harvinder Sembi

Specsavers in Bracknell had a very special guest visit the store during National Eye Health Week (18-24 September).

Focused on eye health

The Mayoress of Bracknell, Councillor Mrs Tina McKenzie-Boyle and consort, Bruce McKenzie-Boyle popped in to the store to meet the team and hear first-hand about some alarming new statistics that featured in a new report published by charity Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and Specsavers.

Boiler more important than eye health!

It seems eye health is not getting the full attention it deserves according to findings uncovered in the report.  In fact, adults check their boiler more than their vision - many of us have our boiler serviced once a year while 50 per cent of UK adults last had their eyes tested more than a year ago or never.

Views from the store director

Harvinder Sembi, optical director met with the Mayoress to discuss the report that shows that one in five people will live with sight loss in their lifetime despite at least half of all cases being avoidable.

He says: 'The Mayoress was surprised to learn that nearly six million people in the UK currently live with sight-threatening conditions yet 25 per cent of people are not having an eye test every two years as recommended by the College of Optometrists.'

What needs to happen

Harvinder explained that some sight loss conditions are preventable with early detection.  He proudly showed how his team can identify issues with a revolutionary eyecare machine called Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).  This clever device helps to detect early on-set eye conditions and diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy - all leading causes of blindness.

Book your sight test!

But Harvinder is keen to stress that a customer needs to step over the threshold first and book that all important sight test.  'I was pretty horrified to learn that people service their boiler more often than having an eye health check so I am urging locals to make it a top priority.  Our vision is precious:  it deserves special care and attention.'
