Here are some top tips to help you savour every sensory sensation that a festival has to offer without compromising your vision and hearing health.
Throw some shade!
Sunglasses are a staple fashion accessory for all festival-goers but more importantly, they are essential for our eye health and protecting vision against harmful UV exposure.
While many people understand the damage UV rays can cause to skin, fewer appreciate the damage they can cause to your eyes. Prolonged exposure of your eyes to UV has been linked to cataracts, macular degeneration and even some types of eye cancer.
Before you buy a pair of cheap sunnies make sure they provide adequate protection – not all do. Sunglasses don’t need to be expensive but they should always conform to agreed safety standards. Look out for a CE (European Community Standard), BSEN1836 (British Standard) or UV400 markings and aim for a pair that offer 80 per cent light reduction.
Put a plug in it
For families going to festivals, a long day of loud music can have a big impact on children’s and indeed, adult’s hearing. - Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables for vital nutrients and vitamins. Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E might help ward off age-related vision problems like macular degeneration and cataracts.
- Just as our body repairs during sleep, our eyes do too so get plenty of sleep to maintain clear eyes.
- Don’t neglect to remove eye make-up at the end of the day as mascara build-up can lead to uncomfortable bumps under the eyelids which pose a risk to vision.
