Specsavers Derry’s Maeve Walsh is now certified in communicating via Makaton sign language.
Great to be able to offer this service to customers
Maeve Walsh, a dispensing optician who has worked at the Derry store for 5 years, said, 'I was keen to undertake a course in Makaton sign language as I felt it would be of benefit both personally and professionally.
'Makaton sign language is now used by many children with developmental delays and special needs as well as parents and teachers. It’s great to be able to offer this service to customers.'
Maeve added, 'We understand that younger children, and their parents, can sometimes find eye and hearing tests a daunting prospect. This can be further heightened for children with special needs or developmental delays, coming into a new environment.
'Hopefully children and their parents will not only be reassured by the warmth and professionalism of our staff but also that we can communicate with their child using Makaton.'
What is Makaton?
Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order. With Makaton, children and adults can communicate straight away using signs and symbols.
