Store directors from Hackney attended the borough’s annual Winter Warmer event on Thursday 26 January to give local residents over the age of 55 advice and information on the importance of regular eye examinations and hearing tests.

The community event

This year, the local council invited residents over the age of 55 to Stoke Newington Town Hall between 11am-3pm to discover what’s going on in their community. More than 500 pensioners attended the event which was aimed at helping them discover what is on offer in their community.

The day allowed residents to find out what's going on at Hackney's libraries, details on courses at Hackney College, learn more on recycling projects, find out information on local community groups, including gardening and health clubs, and acquire more information on health, well-being, energy, and housing in the local area.

Raffle Prizes!

As well as giving vital information on eyecare, the directors, Jayesh Maru and Rupesh Halai, gave everyone they spoke with the opportunity to book a free eye test, worth £20-25. They also donated a free pair of spectacles to the raffle.

A personal connection from the store director

Rupesh Halai, store director, said: ‘Community events such as these are vital for us to spread the message of the importance of having regular eye examinations. As people age, their sight deteriorates.

'A simple eye examination can detect a whole host of conditions, such as diabetes, glaucoma and high blood pressure. Early stages of these diseases often go undetected, so we encourage the over 55’s to visit the opticians at least once a year, as catching the disease early is the best way to stop sight loss.'
