A local man is encouraging local people to visit their opticians regularly after an eye test revealed a serious issue caused by his diabetes.

Paul Sharpe, from Appleby Magna, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes by his GP in May of 2016. When he noticed changes in his vision towards the end of the year, he contacted his local Specsavers store in Ashby de la Zouch.

Blurred vision

‘I had made an appointment at Specsavers but I started to notice that my vision was blurred when I was watching television,’ Paul explained. ‘I asked for an earlier appointment and was seen by the store director, Leon Wilson. He spotted straight away that something wasn’t quite right.’

Paul was referred straight to his GP, where blood test results revealed his diabetes had worsened. Dramatic changes in his blood sugar levels were the cause of his sight problems.

Early signs

Leon Wilson, Specsavers store director, commented: ‘Diabetes can affect the eyes in a number of ways and if undetected, can lead to other conditions such as diabetic retinopathy or cataracts. When I examined Paul, there was a big change in his prescription and, knowing about his condition, I immediately referred him to his GP for a check-up.

'Diabetics are at a much higher risk of developing retinal problems, so I’m glad that Paul recognised the early signs and came to us for help.’

Paul said: ‘I was given medication to manage my condition but it took some time for my blood sugar levels to return to what they should be.

'I visited Specsavers on a number of occasions in the following weeks for sight tests. It was a frustrating process as my prescription would change so quickly.’

Thanks to the help of the correct medication and regular check-ups, Paul now has a solid prescription and wants to encourage others to get regular examinations.

‘A sight test can reveal much more than people often think, so I’d definitely recommend that if you notice a change in your sight or if you’re due a check-up, get yourself to Specsavers,’ he said.

Supportive team

‘Throughout the whole ordeal, the team in Ashby were extremely supportive. During that first sight test, Leon was very reassuring, friendly and explained everything to me thoroughly. At every visit since, I know I’ve been in safe hands. My sight is now better than it was even before I was diagnosed with diabetes. Thank you Specsavers!’

Leon added: ‘We’re delighted with this outcome for Paul. His case highlights the importance of making regular appointments, at least every two years. Not only to identify any irregularities or problems, but as an essential part of an overall health check-up.’
