Lancaster team set sights on safety this winter
To mark Road Safety Week this year, Lancaster Specsavers donated high visibility vests to Lancaster children to help them stay safe and seen on the roads this winter.
The Cheapside store handed over more than 20 vests to the 1st Silverdale Brownies based in Morecambe, and gave away free vests to children who visited the store throughout the awareness week.

Michael Jackson, store director, commented: ‘As the dark and winter conditions set in, it’s more important than ever to make sure our kids are easy to spot.
The Specsavers high vis vests are very popular every year and we’re thrilled to donate them to the Brownies. When children are walking to or from school in the dark, it can be difficult for motorists to see them. Dusk is a particularly hazardous time of day so we’re determined to do what we can to help.
We hope these bright, easily seen vests will help spread the message of the importance of protecting kids, families and everyone else on roads this winter.
This year Road Safety Week urged drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to make a pledge to stay sharp on the roads and help prevent the 2,900 casualties caused each year due to poor driver vision.
The 2016 theme, Make the Brake Pledge, was about people all over the country understanding six key things they can do to protect themselves and the people around them, and reduce emissions and pollution from vehicles. The six Brake Pledge points are: Slow, Sober, Secure, Silent, Sharp and Sustainable.
With sight-related accidents also costing £33m annually Specsavers in Lancaster, official partner of Road Safety Week, is calling for the quarter of drivers that have not had an eye examination in two years to visit the store.
Michael explained: ‘I was shocked to learn that poor driver vision alone leads to 55 casualties every single week and costs an estimated £33 million.
We have decorated the store with road safety banners and facts and are also currently running a special number plate test for customers to help them appreciate the vital importance of good eye health before taking the wheel.
A regular eye examination is a legal requirement for drivers but it is your personal responsibility to ensure you are having your eyes tested frequently.
We’d urge every road user to make a Brake pledge to make our roads safer. Your pledge can be as simple as booking an eye examination, carrying a spare pair of specs in your car, not driving when tired, or even to drive less and use public transport more.’
Gary Rae, director of communications and campaigns from Brake added: ‘I’d like to thank Specsavers in Lancaster for their ongoing support for Road Safety Week. Our theme this year is action-orientated and anyone can make and share the Brake Pledge.
Our survey shows that drivers are aware of the threat of risky behaviour by other drivers, but are inclined to play down the risks involved with their own behaviour. Everyone who drives has to step up and take responsibility. If every driver vowed to make the Break Pledge, then our roads would be safer places for everyone.’
