Keep your eyes safe this summer
We’ve been treated to some fantastic weather recently - especially in South East London. With this in mind, the teams at Beckenham and Penge are urging local people to protect their eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays by coming in store to get their sunglasses checked.
Why don sunglasses?
There are a number of reasons why customers are encouraged to wear sunglasses. Firstly, they are vital in protecting the eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays, which, in large doses, could contribute to the development of cataracts . They are also important for providing added comfort and improved vision in sunlight hours, given that they allay the need to squint.
Sunglasses are also vital in protecting against “blue light” from the solar spectrum, which it has been found could increase one’s risk of macular degeneration. Moreover, they can have a greatly beneficial impact on a person’s ability to drive at night, with sunglasses making it easier to adapt to darkness.
A word from the director
Premal Patel, store director at Specsavers in Beckenham and Penge, says: ‘We’re all hoping that the recent weather is not a one-off and we get to bask in some more sunshine this summer. However, with this nice weather comes risks, no less the harmful UV rays which can cause irritation and in extreme cases lead to serious eye conditions such as cataracts and retinal dysfunction.
‘When shopping for sunglasses we recommend that people select those that bear the CE kite mark and offer 99-100 per cent UV protection – which is indicated by the UV-400 mark on the glasses. Just pop into one of ours stores and we will be more than happy to help you select a pair from our growing range of prescription and non-prescription sunglasses.’
