Staff at Longton's opticianse are supporting World Diabetes Day by teaming up with Lloyds Pharmacy to offer free diabetes checks.
The team are inviting Jane Bouchet, store manager, from the local Lloyds Pharmacy branch into store between 11am - 3pm. Customers can then take a free diabetes test during this time.
There will also be a raffle where shoppers can donate money to Diabetes UK for a chance to win a hamper full of goodies, including diabetic chocolate! The winner will be announced on the day.
Store director Tracey Britton, said: ‘We are pleased to welcome Jayne to the store to help promote World Diabetes Day. It’s a scary statistic that sufferers of diabetes can remain undiagnosed for up to 10 years. However, a sight test at Specsavers can be the first indicator of the disease that directs the person to their GP for testing.
‘We’d urge passers-by to pop into store and get tested, and if you haven’t done so already, book an eye appointment if it’s been longer than two years.’
In 2010, there were approximately 3.1 million people aged 16 or over with diabetes (both diagnosed and undiagnosed) in England. By 2030, this figure is expected to rise to 4.6 million, with 90% of those affected having type 2 diabetes. The charity Diabetes UK estimates that around 850,000 people in England have diabetes but haven't been diagnosed.
