James Adenrele has been named this year’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year at what has become dubbed as the Oscars for specs wearers. The 27-year-old took to the stage to receive the award at a star-studded event hosted by Bradley Walsh at 8 Northumberland Avenue on Tuesday evening.

He was chosen by a panel of expert judges and was presented the award by former Spice Girl and queen of the airwaves Emma Bunton, who kicked off the campaign earlier this year.

Winner walked away with luxury prize

James walked away with a luxury trip for two to the beautiful Bahamas staying at the Atlantis Paradise Island as well as a whopping £10,000 cash prize and £1,000 glasses wardrobe from Specsavers, after being named the overall winner. Having been presented his category winning trophy earlier in the evening by Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding, he was then called back to stage to receive the ultimate prize, beating the six other finalists to the post.

A few words from the winner

James said: ‘Attending the star-studded event felt like a prize in itself, so to go on and win Spectacle Wearer of the Year was amazing and very overwhelming. I am absolutely delighted to have won. ‘I have decided to give the Bahamas holiday to my mother and sister. I owe them everything and this is my way of saying thank-you for their support.’

Celebrities awarded during star-studded evening

Celebrities were also rewarded on the night with Strictly star Kevin Clifton receiving Best Newcomer while pop star couple Natasha Hamilton and Ritchie Neville received a special joint award for their specs style. TV icon Anne Robinson was awarded Services to Specs for her decades of dedicated glasses wearing.

Auction in aid of Kidscape hosted by Christopher Biggins

An auction held on the evening, run by national treasure Christopher Biggins, helped bring the amount raised for Kidscape this year to £80,000, bringing the total raised by Specsavers for the charity in the last six years to £330,000.

DJ set performed by Sarah Harding at after party

Held at 8 Northumberland Avenue, the awards were attended by countless specs-wearing stars including Louis Walsh, who helped judge the finalists, and Made in Chelsea’s Oliver Proudlock, Lucy Watson and Stephanie Pratt. TOWIE star and blogger Ferne McCann, Joey Essex, Brian McFadden, Vogue Williams, Twiggy, Vicki Michelle, Ferne McCann and Lydia and Lucy Mecklenburgh were also in attendance. Sarah Harding performed a DJ set to round off the evening.
