The Hucknall Specsavers team has won a national award in recognition of its excellence in people development.

Specsavers in Hucknall has beaten hundreds of its counterparts around the country to win the 2014 Specsavers Excellence in People Development and Engagement award. This accolade was presented to the Hucknall store for going the extra mile in motivating members of the team, and taking the time to grow employees’ skills. As part of the nomination criteria, comments from satisfied customers were submitted, which detailed the store’s professionalism, helpfulness and family atmosphere. 

About the team

In the last two years, the Hucknall team has almost doubled in size with the addition of seven new starters, including an apprentice lab technician who was retained by the company at the end of his apprenticeship. Two members of staff have completed their degrees in dispensing optics with close support from the store and two employees have advanced on to regional roles within the group.

The Hucknall store provides on-the-job coaching and regular training sessions to advance employees’ skills and incentivises staff with monthly employee awards. Achievements are recognised in daily team meetings and team members are encouraged to feedback and voice their opinions.

Staff are looked after

The team also meets on social occasions such as an end of summer BBQ organised for Hucknall staff and their families, as well as an annual Christmas pub quiz. 

Janet Archer, store director at Specsavers in Hucknall, says: ‘The store is continually striving to help staff achieve their long-term goals. Every employee has a personal development plan in place, and has regular dialogue with their lone manager to discuss career development. These frequent meetings allow us to highlight opportunities to help them progress in the company.

‘We believe that staff who are looked after are happier which results in positive team morale. This in turn creates a pleasant environment for our customers. We’re excited to continue the good work as the store undergoes a refit over Christmas.’

Speaking of the award win, customer service supervisor James Hardwick says: ‘I’m so happy and stunned I can't speak. All I can say is that I work for a great team and it's a privilege to work with them!’

The Hucknall Specsavers team were presented with their award at a glitzy gala dinner held on Saturday 6 December at Birmingham’s ICC, which was compered by comedian Bradley Walsh and attended by more than 1,000 guests. The store was also among six Specsavers opticians shortlisted for the Excellence in the Community award at the ceremony.
