Full steam ahead on Ghanaian kindergarden
Specsavers in Hinckley has successfully raised £9,000 for the Ashanti Development project, enabling the building of a brand new kindergarten to commence.
Staff at the store undertook a variety of activities to achieve their fundraising target, including competitions, raffles and quizzes.
‘We’re very pleased to see the building of the kindergarten progressing so well,’ said Abhijit Roy, store director. ‘Everybody who supported us by making a donation should feel proud of what they’ve given to the people of these impoverished regions of Ghana.’
As part of the community project, local people have so far removed tree stumps and levelled the ground to make way for the new building, which will provide a safe place for children of the Mpantuase and Nkwabrim communities.
Abhijit, who has been named chief of the two Ghanaian communities, will visit the region with a team of Specsavers staff in October.
Run solely by volunteers, Ashanti Development aims to provide impoverished communities in Ghana with water and sanitation, healthcare, education and income generating activities.
