Members of staff at Specsavers Hinckley swap specs for festive knits

Members of staff at Specsavers in Hinckley have put fundraising in the frame this Christmas, collecting donations for two international charities during the festive season.

The team swapped their usual uniforms for Christmas jumpers on Friday 16 December, raising money for global children’s charity Save the Children. Customers and passers-by were also invited to donate their old and unwanted glasses to the Ashanti Development project in Ghana.

Season of giving

‘Christmas is the season of giving and we’re extremely grateful to have such a generous community behind us who are willing to support great causes,’ said store director and Ashanti Development’s UK eye health ambassador, Abhijit Roy.

‘We have been supporting the Ashanti Development for several years and are delighted to have the opportunity to raise funds for another international charity, Save the Children. This Christmas we’re encouraging more people than ever to give what they can.’

Members of staff from Specsavers in Hinckley and Lutterworth visited the Ashanti Development earlier this year to support the clinic in the Ghanaian village of Gyetiase, performing sight tests, dispensing donated specs and treating people from the poorest regions of the country who have little access to eyecare.

Ab continued: ‘Eye health can have a serious impact on quality of life and even life expectancy, so we can’t stress enough the importance of helping people receiving the treatment and glasses they need. We took more than 3,000 pairs of glasses with us during our last visit and would like to collect as many, if not more, in the years to come.’

Run by volunteers, the Ashanti Development aims to improve the lives of people in Ghana through access to healthcare, clean water and education, while Save the Children aims to tackle child poverty, global hunger and protect children who are in danger, exploited or neglected.
