A group of youngsters from an area still affected by the Chernobyl disaster have visited a local optician to receive free eye examinations and glasses.

Visit

On Monday 8 June 2015, Specsavers in Haywards Heath hosted twelve children from Chernobyl, an area which remains contaminated with radiation nearly 30 years after the nuclear power disaster.

Vital

Trevor Hoare, ophthalmic store director of Specsavers in Haywards Heath, said: ‘It’s vital that all children have regular eye checks. The radiation they’re subjected to in Ukraine increases the chances of developing conditions such as cataracts, which would go undetected without an eye examination.

Since there’s no access to eye care in their home town, we’re delighted to give them the opportunity here in Haywards Heath.’

Free

The visit has taken place as part of the children’s trip to the area and all treatment by Specsavers will be completely free of charge.
