Specsavers in Haverhill are informing people on the benefits of the fundus camera, a photographic tool which can be used to detect the early signs of a number of health conditions.

Fundus

The fundus camera takes a digital image of the back of the eye, known as the fundus. This is the only part of the body where the microcirculation of blood can be directly examined. It can detect signs of various health conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma and even life-threatening tumours. Specsavers offers the service at no extra charge to all customers over the age of 40 or when otherwise deemed appropriate by the optometrist.

Vital

Specsavers Haverhill store director, Raju Fynn, said: ‘The fundus camera is a vital piece of equipment and can be a potential life saver when examining the eye health of an individual.

Early detection

‘In many cases, serious health conditions such as diabetes can easily go unnoticed and can ultimately have serious health implications. However, with our fundus camera, we can detect it and encourage our patients to get treatment for it sooner rather than later.’

Fundus camera checks are free of charge and available to people who are over the age of 40 and have been offered the check as a result of an eye test.
