Specsavers in Hamilton is supporting people living with dementia and memory loss by teaming up with a local choir.

The Specsavers store in Quarry Street has joined forces with Musical Memories – a singing group which helps people experiencing memory loss or dementia to sing and have fun with friends and family.

The store has donated £170 to the choir and has also covered the cost of a pull-up banner which will be used in performances.

Fundraising frenzy

Staff have also been running regular fundraising activities in store to raise money for the group.

Last year, the Specsavers store became dementia friendly thanks to an educational partnership with Alzheimer Scotland.

Staff took part in an awareness session where they learned about the illness and found out about the best ways to communicate with customers who have dementia.

A word from our store director

Store director Emma Foster said: ‘Following the dementia training session we had in store last year, we decided to get involved in a local group that supports people and their families who are living with the condition. We know that Musical Memories is a fantastic resource and provides help and support to families living with dementia in Hamilton and South Lanarkshire.

‘We’re very proud to be teaming up with Musical Memories and fundraising for the group this year.’

Staff and customers support

Musical Memories chairman Sam Thompson, said: ‘Singing in a social setting is a great help for people living with dementia. Specsavers is a big part of the community here in Hamilton and it’s great that the store is supporting us.

‘We would like to say a huge thank you to Specsavers staff and customers for their support. The money is already helping us to raise awareness of the services we provide.’

The Musical Memories choir meets every Wednesday morning from 10.30 to 12.00 at St John's Church Hall in Hamilton. There are no auditions and anyone with a dementia diagnosis is welcome to come along, with a friend, family member or carer.
