A Haggerston woman has been chosen out of hundreds of people across the South East as a regional finalist for Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year.
Mingle with the stars
Maeve Staunton aged 35 from Haggerston could win £10,000 and a luxury holiday in the Bahamas if she wins, as well as a chance to mingle with the stars at the 20th annual Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards.
Glasses wearers have been showing off their specs style by sharing their selfies online and entering in stores across the UK and Republic of Ireland.
Maeve was invited to visit Specsavers in Strand, near to where she works at John Roberston Architects, to receive a bottle of champagne, a certificate and a £150 glasses voucher.
Maeve, who’s originally from Longford in Ireland, says: ‘When I was 12 I found a pair of John Lennon-style round, tortoise shell glasses with curly-back ears and an 18 carat gold bridge in my granny’s house. I was so excited when my mum let me put my lenses in them. Before then I’d always just felt ‘okay’ in my glasses, but ever since they have really become a fashion statement for me so I’m thrilled to have reached this point in the competition’.
Mandeep Aujla, store director at Specsavers in Strand, says: ‘Maeve is a fantastic ambassador for the Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition. She’s really embraced wearing glasses and has a really unique style, which is what the competition is all about. On behalf of Specsavers Strand I’d like to wish her all the best for the next stage of the competition.’
The awards were launched by Spice Girls singer and Heart FM DJ Emma Bunton earlier this year. If she triumphs in her age category, Maeve could meet Emma at the celeb-packed awards ceremony at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on Tuesday 6 October.
